Celebrity Cars: Who's driving what? Print E-mail

ImageWhen talking about celebrity cars, no other car evokes the aura or iconic status of 007’s fleet of Aston Martins and other similar luxury and delectable automobiles. You may say, what about the Batmobile? As much as we would like to own one, we all know mimicking James Bond is somehow more realistic than Gotham’s very own Batman.

Jerry Seinfeld may be banned from driving his brilliant Porsche 356 Speedster while Jay Leno is a proud owner of his McLaren F1 roadcar but what is going on this side of the Atlantic? The obvious first name that pops in your head is Mr. Top Gear himself Jeremy Clarkson. Some of his many possessions include a Mercedes-Benz SLK55 AMG, a Lambhorghini Gallardo Spyder for which he had to famously give up his Ford GT. Our footballers when not overtaking police cars, like Rio Ferdinand did with his Chrysler 300C Hemi, really know their classy cars. Quite the Bentley fan, this one. The hot-blooded Manchester United defender’s garage includes a Continental GT Coupe and an Arnage among others. If we are talking celebrity cars, the brightest in the galaxy (Ha!) would undoubtedly be football icon David Beckham. Come to think of it, the man has so many posh wheels he turned down an offer for a free car from the legendary car company Ferrari’s chairman. Barring a customised Ferrari, Becks also owns a Porsche 911, a Bentley Arnage, Hummer H2, Range Rover, a Mercedes S500, a Jaguar, a Rolls-Royce Phantom and a Lamborghini Gallardo among others. Phew! Nice to know Jenson Button takes his job seriously and even brings it home. The man can’t get enough of Honda, locked in his garage is the fastest and best looking Honda, the NSX in sunny yellow. You have to admire his allegiance, Button owns other Honda bablies like the S2000 and the more subtle Civic Type-R.

Anyone who has watched a custom car show on telly knows how much Musicians love their wheels. Suddenly, it’s not so hard to believe that BBC1 and Pimp My Ride’s Tim Westwood would go old school with a 1969 Chevrolet Impala SS 454. Our favourite car aficionado is Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay, quite the avid car fanatic this one. Amidst many cars like his Lambhorghini Diablo, Mercedes G-Wagen, Aston martin DB5 and others, most impressive is his collection of Ferraris which include the rare Enzo, a 550, a Mondial, and an F355. The ladies are not far behind in this race for the most posh car. Leading obviously is Queen bee Madonna and her fabulous Maybach limousine. A few others in her garage include an Audi A8, a Mini Cooper S, a BMW 7-Series, to name a bit. Madonna apparently has been slapped with quite a few parking tickets for her Maybach. Ouch! On the other hand is model and Big brother contestant Jodie Marsh who prefers her monster trucks and other cars to be not too loud or flashy. Surprised? Don’t be. The girl owns an Audi TT, a Toyota Vigo and currently wants a TVR Tuscan or a powerful Dodge Ram.

What’s with comedians and supercars? The delightful Mr. Bean aka Rowan Atkinson has the very exclusive and very formidable McLaren F1 all to himself. His other motoring pleasures include a Bentley Mulsanne, an Aston Martin V8 Zagato, the family Audi 8 and an MG X-Power SV. Despite owning all these beauties, Rowan feels he could never handle owning a Porsche. Whatever his reason may be, the guy knows quite a bit about cars considering he has written quite a few times for 'Car' magazine and 'Evo'. What bothers me the most is why papa Prince Charles can’t buy favourite princes Harry and William cars more delightful and exciting than an A3 Audi (Prince Harry’s) or a Volkswagen Golf Car (Prince William’s).

If the seductive throaty growl or sheer magnitude of one of these babies as they drive past your favourite celebrity doesn’t tempt or tease them, you don’t know your star and their snobbish celebrity car fixations well enough. Take a look at these motoring delights and ask yourself if you can blame them for loving these fabulous mean machines?
